Extracorporeal (or Radial) Shock Wave Therapy
What is it and how does it work?
Radial Shockwave Therapy is the application of a high-energy acoustic (ballistic) pulses transmitted into the tissue of the affected area of the body. Each Radial Shockwave treatment works to increase the metabolic activity around the site of pain or discomfort, stimulating the reabsorption of irritative calcium deposits in tendons by breaking them down from within, whilst re-polarising hypertonic (relaxing and loosening tight) muscles and stimulating the body’s natural healing process, thus reducing pain.
Radial Shockwave Therapy typically requires only three treatments: one week apart for optimal results. Treatment is carried out by passing over the injured area with the shockwave applicator. Careful positioning of the shockwave applicator is determined for optimum results. The treatment is approximately five minutes and may be slightly uncomfortable but is usually well tolerated by everyone. Most patients feel significant results/changes after the first treatment.
Why use Radial Shockwave Therapy? It is an excellent alternative for people with chronic pain who have exhausted all other treatment modalities (e.g. Physiotherapy, chiropractic, massage therapy, etc.), and is often used as a pre-surgery option. Radial Shockwave Therapy® works without the use of X-ray equipment or drugs. It stimulates the body’s self-healing processes and therefore is well tolerated.
A great option instead of surgery, that has a long recovery time, more rehab, and lost work time, lost income, and reduced quality of life/lifestyle while the patient’s recover.
Surgical success rates are much lower than the RSWT in proven results
Eliminate the use of medication
Eliminate the use of cortisone, or repeated injections
Used when all other methods have failed
Proven track record for Athletes and bodybuilders who want to return to their sport quickly, rather than continuing to suffer from chronic pain.
Radial Shockwave Therapy has been scientifically proven to help relieve chronic pain associated with:-
• Heel Pain
• Plantar Fasciitis
• Achilles Tendonitis
• Patella Tendonitis
• Ilio‐Tibial Band Syndrome
• Shoulder Problems
• Tennis/Golfers Elbow
• Spinal Problems + many other chronic pain conditions
Are there any side effects?
There may be irritation or swelling but it usually disappears within one week of treatment.
How fast does it work?
Most patients feel significant results after the first treatment. Some patients feel a difference after finishing their second treatment. The healing process is accumulative, therefore patients continue to have results weeks after ending their treatment. Because the cells are broken down, and are rebuilding (they are actually put back into the acute phase) the maximum relief is usually felt at the 12th week after their last treatment.
Has Radial Shock Wave been clinically proven?
Yes. Several studies have been performed – view more information here –http://emsmedicalamerica.com/pubs/ dolorclastarticles.htm
A multicentric, blind, placebo-controlled study into the efficacy of ballistically generated shock waves in the therapy of tennis elbow and calcaneal heel spur concluded 88 % of patients assessed their therapy as “very good” or “good after treatment”. In a follow up survey 12 months after their last treatment, 95% of the tennis elbow, and 94% of the heel spur patients responded that they were still very satisfied with their results.
• The energy produced by Extracoporeal Shock Wave Therapy results in the disruption of calcification/fibrosis in soft tissues and around joints n.b. this calcification/fibrosis often presents with inflammation
• Pain Management ‐ The treatment effects nerves by raising the pain threshold. It promotes release of enkephalins and endorphins (natural internal opiates). Technically speaking; Mechanoreception inhibits nociception [pain perception]
• Accelerates healing by increasing blood circulation and increasing metabolism
• Some will develop bruising (haematoma) during treatment
• Please do not put undue or unnecessary stress or strain on your body during treatment regime
• No anaesthesia is required Contra‐indications (when treatment is not advisable/suitable)
• Children under 16.
• Surgical arthrodesis/prosthesis
• Some (but not all cancer sufferers)
• Elderly patients with very brittle skin
• Patients on Warfarin/Heparin
• Acute stages of pyrexia/inflammation
• Certain mental conditions
• Patients on certain types of medication
• Patients with pacemakers may need assessing
• Some Osteoporosis sufferers
• Pregnancy around 11‐13 weeks
• Type I Diabetics need assessing
• No treatment near fracture sites/osteomyelitis/osteogenesis imperfecta

MASTERPULS ® MP200 HIGH FREQUENCY RADIAL SHOCK WAVE TRIAL RESULTS:‐
Calcified tendonitis of the shoulder & Frozen Shoulder
[Typically bicep and deltoid muscle tendons] MP200 is used to alleviate pain in the affected shoulder, to eliminate pain‐induced restriction of mobility and to dissolve the calcifications that are the root cause of the condition.
71% of patients free of complaints* 12% significantly better*
Radial and Ulnar Epicondylitis (Tennis and Golfer’s elbow)
Chronic inflammation of tendon insertions; or pain‐inducing trigger points are eliminated to ensure successful elbow pain relief. This improves elbow mobility and increases forearm strength.
65% of patients free of complaints* 15% significantly better*
Plantar Fasciitis (pain in the sole of the foot)
Radial shock wave therapy provides a definitive improvement in the clinical development of chronic plantar fasciitis/calcaneal spur. As pain symptoms are eliminated, the load‐bearing capacity of the affected foot is rapidly increased.
74% of patients free of complaints* 16% significantly better*
Both syndromes are chronic, mostly sports‐induced disorders. The pathologically altered painful tendon section exhibits a relatively large area. MP200 allows this target region to be covered in its entirety so that the desired regenerative effect can be achieved.
70% of patients free of complaints* 18% significantly better*
Other applications for Radial Shock Wave Therapy
Myofascial trigger points (> 90% success rate)
Other disorders of tendon insertions significantly helped by RSWT:‐
Activation of muscle and connective tissue
Acupuncture shock wave therapy (up to 80% success rate, e.g. in Gonarthrosis therapy ‐ ‘Gon’ means ‘knee’. ‘Arthrosis’ means ‘disorder of the joint’.
Gonarthrosis thus means a disorder of the knee joint, generally implying early joint surface damage of any kind, while ‘gonarthritis’ implies more advanced arthritic degeneration/destruction.
